Description
The Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni fundamentalist movement with ramifications in almost all Arab countries and a history of oppression by most regimes, is ready to seize the moment in a region where popular uprisings have managed to depose two longtime autocratic rulers and threaten many others. "This is doubtlessly the right moment for the Muslim Brotherhood from Turkey to Egypt and to Morocco. Shiite political Islam is ruling Baghdad, and Hamas, (a militant offshoot of the Muslim Brothers), is ruling Gaza," Jihad Zein, the op-ed page editor with the Beirut-based influential daily AN NAHAR, wrote on Apr. 6. "Will this be a temporary moment whereby (fundamentalism's rise) is the unavoidable first wave of democratic change in the Arab world? Will it retreat after it expresses itself, having been simmering for a long time? Will it return to its normal size once democracy is established in many countries? Will it go back to its regular size as it was in Egypt in the 1940s, in Syria in the 1950s and in Jordan in the 1980s?" he asked. "Or will it, as some Westerners and some Arab liberals fear, sustain longstanding unilateral hegemony, as did after 1948 (the year Israel was created) Arab nationalism that is now being challenged by change? How will Islamists choose between Turkish Islamists, who developed into a democratic party similar to Christian democrats in Europe, and Saudi fundamentalists who created al-Qaeda?" he added.
